Don’t Overlook The Signs Of A Bad Relationship

Posted By Alan Bentley on July 8, 2009

Nobody wants to be alone and we love the company and attention that we can get from a partner. Although you may have a lot of time invested in this way, you need to understand that sometimes things just won’t work out. Be on the lookout for signs of a bad relationship for your own good.

Try not to snipe at your partner and hold back those negative words. Did you know that it can take as many as five positive experiences to overcome the net effect of one? Constant two-way bickering can be one of the early signs of a bad relationship. As often as you can, try and exchange loving and generous words and gestures.

You must ensure that you spend quality time together, exclusively. Whilst hanging out with mutual friends is a lot of fun, make sure that you allocate time just for him and that he takes the same approach. By enjoying exclusive time together your relationship will be well-nourished.

Both parties need to focus on the fact that there must be a balance between individual needs. Not being able to give and take is one of the primary signs of a bad relationship in process. Here, as in many other places, negotiation is key to solving the issue.

Do not be tempted to sleep on a bad situation and jump on a problem immediately with resolution. Buried resentments lead to further signs of a bad relationship and additional problems. Don’t be irritated by his idiosyncrasies, but find a way to celebrate them. Relegate friction to the back burner and find a consensus at all times to give your long-term potential a great boost. Appreciate everything that is different about your guy!

Be prepared to own up if you have made a mistake or done something that you shouldn’t have. If you break a promise, fess up to it and never be defensive. Whilst on the subject of being defensive make sure that you exhibit flexibility when it comes to your point of view. Never cling to your own beliefs at any expense and be prepared to shift to a stance of neutrality so that you can learn and develop. Intransigence on either part is one of the primary signs of a bad relationship.

Never be tempted to punish mistakes or bad behavior. This will not help you to repair the situation. You should always be flexible but you must make sure that he does his best to act the same way. Look at your relationship as between an adult and adult and not as if it were between a parent and a child.

If you sense signs of a bad relationship between you, take time to analyze the good versus the bad. Be honest and see if the good column out weighs the bad column. In some cases you must move on to pastures new for the good of both of you, but often the situation is very fixable.
