Disabled Dating Online: The Benefits And Perils

Posted By Thomas Voullemier on July 7, 2009

You can have a lot of fun meeting people from across the globe online. If you’re looking for love, there are all sorts of dating websites available, included ones created for specific groups of people that let you find others like you. Disabled dating websites are just one example, but unfortunately, with such sites, you must also be on the lookout for scams.

The disabled can find all sorts of opportunities through dating websites, a kind of social networking that introduces them to others who are also disabled, and people who might be interested in dating someone who is. The message boards give an idea of the diversity, but all the different people there are really able to form very close bonds with each other.

It’s nice that there are so many places online do so much good. These websites help their members who have had bad experiences talk about it with others who have gone through similar ordeals as well. People who meet there form real relationships, sometimes even one that lead to lasting love. But indeed, they also fall prey to a lot of fraud that can be really harmful.

The 419 Nigerian Scam is just one example of a potential danger. Nigerian scammers, posing as the young women they certainly were not, got to know Americans who thought they were talking to other people in the United States. They become very close with these presumed partners and eventually send off a lot of money that they would never see again, leaving them without a penny to their name.

Disabled daters often find themselves the targets for crimes such as this one. They are pulled in by an attractive photo, set up as part of a fake account by people wanting only to take advantage of them. Some had their money taken from them as well, but even worse, others fell victim to sex crimes with profiles set up by dangerous criminals.

Because of these crimes, most websites will give you ways to tell if that person you’re talking to is really a scammer. It’s common advice now that you shouldn’t share personal details with people until you become familiar with them or on message boards that could make them publicly available. For people who do become victims, there is often potential legal action.

Don’t think that these scams are only performed by individuals. There can be whole websites set up to get people to throw away their money, usually by saying they don’t cost a thing but having the actual sign-up be the only thing that is free. After ages of unknowingly using very costly features, the users face an unexpected and very high bill.

Even when low-cost websites don’t scam visitors themselves, they let a lot of scammers fall through their screening process. Websites that feature Asian and Eastern European mates with model-like features are usually showing off women who don’t even exist and getting men to throw their money away blindly. Be smart enough not to do the same.
