New Years Resolutions

Just a thought regarding romance, dating and New Year’s Resolutions. 

If you are going to make some New Year’s reolutions this year regarding your romantic life, focus on yourself and the actions which will help you achieve what you want.  Dont make your resolutions about the results or achievements themselves, rather the actions that get you there.  Ie. Don’t resolve to get into a relationship in 2009, reflect on the reasons it didn’t happen in 2008 and resolve to take action on those points. 

For example, if one of the reasons you didn’t find someone this year may hae been that you kept saying “no” to invitations because you were waiting for perfection.  So resolve to say Yes to a proportion of your dates invites.  60% or something like that.  Worse comes to worse, at the end of the year you’ve met a lot of people and opened your mind to getting to know about others.

Another issue you may have is that despite going out and socialising frequently, you may be closed to new people and only socialise with those in your group of friends.  As such you never meet new people.  So you may resolve this year to meet and chat with 2 people you’ve never met, each time you go out.

The point is your resolution is a specific action which you can work on from day 1 and get you out of any ruts you’ve gotten yourself into.  Its not a goal that you can get dispirited about, or can be foiled by fate.  Even if you don’t reach your goal, you’ll be a lot closer as you’ve taken ACTION.

Hey guys, in 2009 we have decided to expand Dating Down Under into relationships also.  All pretty similar stuff, reviewing websites, books etc.  Obviously we can’t date forever, relationships are the next logical step in a romantic life.  For 2009, it will also be the next logical step for the website.

Dating During Christmas

Coming into the holiday season is a difficult time for many singles.  It brings thoughts of self doubt and questions of “another year and still single, what is wrong with me?”.  Pressure and similar questions from relatives do nothing but exacerbate the situation.  Yet the answer is simple.  There is nothing wrong with you, you’re just not in a relationship.  That’s all.

The problem is that these thoughts have a tendancy to lead to bad decision making.  WHich leads to getting another year off on the wrong foot.  So one piece of advice we offer at this time of year is don’t force things.  Don’t just throw yourself away to get a partner.  Rather, use this time to reflect on what you want in a relationship.  Clarify in your mind the characteristics of the person with whom you could have a successful relationship.  We wrote an article on this topic earlier in 2008 which you can view here: Dating Advice – What Do You Want?

Do You Think About Your Failures?

2009 Approaching

Yes, its coming close to the end of the year.  Are you still single?
